Roosevelt Island Arts Center

Roosevelt Island Arts Center. the work.group architecture

The design for an arts center on Roosevelt Island employed a strategy of learned, rather than integrated, wayfinding. We believe people are able to give meaning to their actions when they move with freedom and choice through an environment. The design process began with the archaeological conception of a catalog of conducting bodies, or internal landmarks. These were spun into strings and woven upon the larger context through connections to external landmarks. Essentially a design in reverse, from component to organization, the building empowers individuals to shape their own relationship with the building and site.
